The 2016 new G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000

The G-Shock Frogman has always been Casio G-Shock’s flagship model. It is the only watch in the G-Shock collection that is a serious dive watch. For years, the Frogman has been evolving and created hits. In 2016, a new model GWF-D1000 has come out and here we are to look at it.

Like other G-Shock models, the Frogman is full of functions you need or may find obsolete. What makes the watch different is that it is water-resistant to 200m. It has a depth gauge that measures the depth of your dive and it is solar-powered. It receives radio signals up to six times a day to give you the most accurate time. It can operate for up to 23 months. Other functions include a tide graph, stop watch functions, a digital compass and a moon phase display. It also has world-time functions.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The new GWF-D1000 is available in two colors – black and blue. You can bang it on anything while you cannot bear to bang your Submariner on a tree trunk. A special edition GWF-D1000K-7JR of 1500 pieces has also been released on the theme of Love The Sea and The Earth. The Rolex 116655 – Rolex’s answer for younger fans?

The Rolex 116655 was released in 2015 as a surprise to most Rolex fans. It is a 40mm rose gold Yacht Master on a rubber strap. While very often being criticized as dull and conservative, Rolex presented us a watch that belonged only to online predictions and fantasy.

 

The Yacht Master is never a very hot item in the whole Rolex collection. It lives in the shadow of the more clearly positioned Submariner. As a watch with a bi-directional bezel, it is not a diver like the Submariner, though. It is instead a watch for Yacht race, or, a more elegant version of the Submariner for yacht racers.

 

 



 

 

 

Before its official release, some websites already predicted a ceramic bezel on a Yacht Master. The design also appeared on some custom made Rolex Yacht Master but not on rose gold. So, this watch is probably Rolex’s answer to fans’ aspiration for cutting-edge designs.

 



 

Unlike the traditional Yacht Master, which is somewhat dull and lacks contrast, the 116655 looks quite appealing to young Rolex fans. The bezel is in matt black ceramic and it features polished numerals on a sandblasted background. The Yacht Master is the only watch in the Rolex collection that features two different kinds of finishing on the bezel. It is indeed very exquisite. On the dial, the red letters of Yacht Master is very catchy. Together with a 40mm rose gold case and a rubber strap which features a metal interior. It is called the Oysterflex bracelet – a rubber bracelet with the strength of a metal bracelet.

If you have always admired the Yacht Master for its elegance, the 116655 is the watch you have to get. It is a watch with aesthetics that cannot be found in other Rolex watches. It is also a gold Rolex that feels very trendy and chic.

At around 70-80k HKD, you can get this new 2016 JLC worldtimer which has another impressive complication – the deadbeat second. Yes, this is a mechanical watch but the second hand does not sweep. Instead, it ticks like quartz watches. This allows a more precise reading of time. Completed with the new JLC movement which now features a solid gold rotor, the watch offers you a very fine worldtimer at a price that is hard to beat. The details on the dial are also impressive with a world map, the names of cities and a rotating ring that you can adjust to show time of different places.

 

 



 

3.      Jaeger-Lecoultre ultrathin Perpetual Calendar

 

 

 

The ultrathin Moon is not enough for you? No problem. Here is the new black dial Jaeger-Lecoultre Perpetual Calendar. It is 39mm wide and displays the day, the date, the month, the year and the moonphase at 12o’c clock. This is by far the best perpetual calendar at this price range. You can get this watch at around 110k HKD after discounts. Other versions include white dial in steel and in rose gold and white gold. It is a very practical watch with a very competitive price. The black dial version has a movement that features a solid gold rotor which JLC has seemingly been installing them on other movements as well.

HKWF Future Explorer predictions – the Explorer III

This year, Rolex has updated the Explorer I 214270 with longer hands and lume on the numerals of 3,6 and 9.

 

The revival of Air king with Yellow words under the Rolex Crown.

 

The Explorer II 216570 has been around for a few years. Could there be updates later? Here are some of our predictions.

 

 

 

1.      Ceramic bezel

Rolex has just added the ceramic bezel on the Daytona making it a 116500ln. Even the Yacht Master has a ceramic bezel in the rose gold model, could the Explorer II be the next model to receive the ceramic upgrade? A grey ceramic bezel will look really cool. Also, the numerals on the ceramic bezel could be presented in sharp colors, adding some chic to the very down-to-earth watch.

 

 

 

 

2.      New movement

As seen on the Datejust 41 this year and the Day-Date 40 last year, Rolex has begun to replace old movements with newer ones. Although the difference may not be felt by everyone, an upgrade of the movement can mean adding a Faraday cage for resisting magnetic field or better power reserve, making the Explorer II a more all-round watch.

 

 



 

3.      Downsizing

The current 42mm diameter Explorer II may be reduced to 41 or 40mm in the future. This can be true as the Rolex DD41 has been discontinued being replaced by the DD40. Rolex released the 42mm Explorer II to fit the trend of big watches. Now, as huge watches like Deep Sea prove to be low in sales, Rolex may in the future update the Explorer II in 40 or 41mm.

 

 



4.      Dial aesthetics

The current orange hand of the Explorer II echoes with that of the Rolex 1655. In the future, the hour and minute hands can be made more proportionally while the GMT hand can be made in green, the Rolex color. Yellow would be a nice choice as well.

 

 

I would say no one will not resist the temptation of a new Explorer Ver. 3 or Ver.3.5 to have the following new feature.

 

a. 40mm case

b. yellow minute hand

c. new movement

d. ceramic bezel

e. Black dial

 

Rolex can set a new price like Ref 116710BLBR as high as

HK$68,000  I believe I will buy first.

3.      Audemars Piguet Diver Chronograph

 

 

 

Speaking of colors and durability, you can expect nothing less from the 2016 AP Diver Chronograph. Coming in yellow, orange, blue and green, they are some of the best summer watches you can get.

 

 

 

Worn on a thick rubber strap, these Diver Chronographs are best for watersports. As colorful as they are, the 42mm watch features ceramic chronograph pushers and crown. The movement can be seen through a display case back. The well-decorated solid gold rotor can be viewed. Whether you dive with this watch or not, the AP Diver Chronograph makes one of the best summer watches.

 

 

4.  Audemars Piguet Ceramic Diver and Forged Carbon Diver

 

 

 

 

 

Think that the Diver Chronograph is not light enough? You can always go for the AP Ceramic Diver or the Diver Forged Carbon. They have simpler functions and on the ceramic diver, a stunning movement that can be viewed through the case back. You will not easily scratch your watch when doing any kinds of sports as well. The Forged Carbon Diver gives you more layers of texture with its case made of forged carbon and its bezel ceramic.

 

5.   G-Shocks (Frogman, Rangeman…or doorman?)

Any G-shocks can be very good summer watches as they are extremely durable, light and colorful. One of the watches that can impress is this Rangeman released in June.

The yellow version is also very sharp for summer. G-shocks are of low cost and very good for summer when you wear a t-shirt and shorts. You can basically feel easy when doing anything with them without worrying about scratching your watch. It is an important thing in summer especially when you sweat.
